Overview

Imagine arriving in a new country, a new school, and a new classroom where no one speaks your language. Even at home, there are words you struggle to communicate. For many immigrant children, this creates double-limited bilingualism, a stage where they don’t have enough vocabulary in either language to understand the lesson or express themselves. When you can’t find the words, it’s easy to fall behind. So we asked: what if support didn’t feel like technology, but like a friend? Introducing Google Pixie, a multimodal AI companion disguised as a plush. Pixie listens, translates in an age-appropriate way, and follows along with the lesson in real time. When a child feels stuck, they can squeeze Pixie to quietly signal the teacher without drawing attention. If a word, phrase, or slang doesn’t make sense, Pixie clarifies it instantly, helping students move from silence to participation. Back home, Pixie becomes a tutor for the whole household, helping parents and children navigate lessons together and stay involved in the learning journey. Immigrant students don’t fall behind because they’re incapable, they fall behind because they feel alone. Pixie makes sure they never have to learn alone.
